Back in 2004, we were introduced to the wonderful testimony of Josh Brown and the grunge rock sound of his band Day Of Fire. The band's inaugural release was pretty good, but the follow-up album unfortunately fell a little short of my expectations. Now, after almost four years, we have the third Day Of Fire installment, titled Losing All, which is being delivered via Razor & Tie Records. So, how does it stand up to the band's prior releases and will the fact that they're on a new label make any difference?
When I think of Day Of Fire, I think 90's grunge metal with a mix of ballads and that's exactly what you get when you pop in this album for a listen, regardless of the guys being on a new record label. Losing All begins with "Light Em Up," "Hello Heartache," and "When I See You," tracks that all follow that above mentioned style perfectly. "Airplane" has a southern feel to it, which works well with Brown's voice, but it all comes apart during the chorus. Then songs like "Cold Addiction" and "Hey You" seem to fall flat without offering anything special to the listener.
While the bulk of the album is filled with decent - but not great - music, there are a few standout tracks. Both "Never Goodbye" and "Long Highway" are examples of slower ballads, and carry great messages to listeners about persisting through difficult times. The best track on the album, however, is "The Dark Hills," a rather deep and meaningful track that talks about Jesus savings all of us, even the biggest of sinners. The song is moving both lyrically and musically.
All in all, the album is not great, but it's not bad either. The band showcases a specific sound, and one has to like the music style to really enjoy the album. Josh's voice is one of the unique types that you'll either love or hate. The bottom line is, if you're a fan of the band's previous efforts, you will certainly enjoy "Losing All," but if you haven't enjoyed much of them so far, Losing All won't win you over any time soon.
