Michael Gungor Band
Ancient Skies

Album length: 13 tracks: 58 minutes, 17 seconds
Street Date: September 9, 2008

Almost one year has passed since the release of Michael Gungor Band’s debut, and a phenomenal debut it was and still is. Hoping to make even more waves among the masses, their sophomore effort Ancient Skies was released earlier this month. The stakes are higher, the bar level has increased, and the only question that proves importance this time around is if the record is yet another success achieved by this acclaimed worship quintet.

Unfortunately, this record is not entirely saturated with new cuts. In a recent blog, Michael Gungor shares their new journey being signed to Brash Music. He explains to fans that the record label wanted to rerelease All I Need Is Here on a “broader level,” but wanted the band to add a few new tracks for the sake of their listeners.

“Say So” is the first piece of fresh content on the track listing, providing gritty, edgy guitar riffs and fast-paced drumming with a lyrical declaration proclaiming to “let the redeemed of the Lord say so” and “be salt and light in the world.” For the song “You Are The Light,” Michael’s wife Lisa takes over on vocals, locking in another musical highlight filled with angelic vocals and an energetic rhythm. “White Man” is the final new track, and possibly the most unique of the three. With a light-hearted tune plus poignant and slightly-humorous-at-times lyrics, this one will definitely be remembered by the listener for quite some time.

Even though this record is not completely covered in new material, I can honestly say that I consider it to be a sophomore slump, being that it is mostly just a rerelease. Perhaps Michael Gungor and his band will produce a third attempt to make up for this unimpressive feat.
