I said in my review of The Evan Anthem's debut Prologue that it would be exciting to see where The Evan Anthem next took their unique rock sound that they had themselves crafted. All of that excitement is condensed into forty-seven succulent minutes of music, hereby known as their sophomore release Sens.
The Evan Anthem has taken their ambient rock sound, somewhat reminiscent of Weezer (especially on "Chloroform") or Bleach, and made it epic. Mae's The Everglow comes to mind on more than one occasion. And though you can draw comparisons from many different sides, the fact still remains that The Evan Anthem is, musically, on a plateau all their own.
Unlike their last release, they experiment more with their sound and take it into different directions. Some is more ambience driven, while other tracks have more of a pop sensibility. And while their last album seemed to somewhat drag on, with songs running together, Sens is an eclectic collection of twelve well-thought-out and unique tracks.
Even still, there will be those that will not be able to sink their teeth into The Evan Anthem. Hopefully, however, some that turned away Prologue will better understand the concept with Sens. The Evan Anthem is still selective taste, but at least this time around they have gained more accessibility. For those open to their sound, Sens is a wonderful album that will have a hard time finding its way out of your disc tray.
