Pop/punk/rock is a genre that never seems to die. In the nineties' Christian scene, it had more of an underground indie appeal, but time passed, and things became increasingly mainstream. The same was true in the secular market. Bands like Sum 41, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is…, and New Found Glory keep the dream alive, and keep the executives happy.
And as things become more mainstream, carbon copies are inevitability, and oh, are they plenty. It becomes harder and harder to weed through the imitators and realize that this was once a genre of elite bands, and that every once in awhile, a band steps out of the mold and makes a statement.
It'd be a stretch to say that Run Kid Run defines the above statement, but to state that they're even in consideration for the honor says something to you about their Tooth & Nail debut This Is Who We Are. With a little Number One Gun, Acceptance, Hawk Nelson, The Wedding, and even some of The Ataris, Run Kid Run attacks with a ten track, non-stop catch-fest. David Curtis' vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Jordan Pundik's of New Found Glory, blended with Jeff Schneeweis' of Number One Gun, and topped off with a bit of Jason Vena's of Acceptance. They're somewhat normal stylistically, and pop/punk fans will feel right at home as they listen to This Is Who We Are.
But what magnifies the band's talent musically, is how they excel lyrically. Run Kid Run has a passion for God, and they want to tell you about it. You can tell these guys took a page from Hangnail in the way they approach songwriting. It's almost rewarding to listen to a band that brings a positive message in such a catchy, accessible way.
Run Kid Run should cause waves in the industry. It's nothing you haven't heard before, but it's a fresh and, as stated, rewarding listen. One thing pop/punk severely lacks is spiritual lyrics, but there's no hiding the message of Run Kid Run. This Is Who We Are is a fitting title, indeed.
