Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 13 tracks
Street Date: November 20, 2007

Jordin Sparks is no new face to music listeners. If you haven't heard any of her music by now, it's time to come out of hiding. Aside from winning GMA's "Music in the Rockies" competition several years ago and touring with Michael W. Smith twice, Sparks won American Idol last year, and she sang the national anthem at this past year's Superbowl. After releasing her self-titled debut in November 2007, Jordin acquired a mass fan base, and her music shows why.

Firmly rooted in Christian music since the beginning, Jordin Spark's first single from her powerhouse record was "This Is My Now." She performed the song on the American Idol finale, and it was written by none other then Scott Krippayne, who's work includes songs written for Avalon and Jaci Velasquez to name a couple. "One Step at a Time" encourages patience and determination, while proclaiming "it's your faith that makes you stronger." The song that really caught the attention of listeners was "Tattoo," which calmly ends a struggling relationship. Other tracks such as "No Air" (a duet with hip-hop artist Chris Brown) and "Permanent Monday" are made to be radio hits, and at the same time offer wholesome messages that stress the importance of strong, faithful relationships. "God Loves Ugly" is Jordin's attempt to defy the Hollywood message of the importance of outward appearance, and instead is a powerful reminder that God judges the heart and sees each person for who they are, not what they look like. Another winning track is "See My Side," which encourages the listener to work out disagreements. Vocally, the album is overall very well-produced, fits Jordin's music style, and has helped her find her niche in the music industry.

Sure to raise a few eyebrows here and there may be the song "Shy Boy." While not suggestive in any way, the song's setting is in a lounge/club atmosphere. The track's overall message, though, speaks of staying away from "bad boys" and "crude boys" that would otherwise put her in an unfavorable situation.

You may have to give this record several spins before it really makes a connection. But when you delve into the lyrics, it's easy to see that this is a solid album. Every track promotes Christian morals that tend to be absent in other similar mainstream artists like Jordin, such as Alicia Keys and Keyshia Cole. And, although the record is meant to be more positive rather than spiritual, you'll find that ultimately Jordin's goal is to promote an optimistic message that sends light into the dark world of the mainstream.
