Very rarely will a new artist require a new genre to be developed just for them. Even more rarely will
that artist redefine a whole class of music. Starflyer 59 did just these two things with
their debut album Silver back in 1993.
Indie music would never be the same when Starflyer decided to enter the scene. Music that was
unclassifiable, emotionally driven, and fan friendly; it is no wonder Starflyer 59 has become one of
Christian music's most popular underground artists. Silver introduced music to an audience that,
at the time, was undefined. Was it rock? Alternative? Certainly not grunge. Soon SF59's music was given that tag
of "shoegazer."
The album opens with a bang with "Blue Collar Love" and ends with a darkening shout with
"The Dungeon." The music in the middle is thick with guitar and mystical with the vocals. From start to
finish, this album is a true classic. Thankfully, for newer Starflyer fans, Tooth and Nail decided to
rerelease this album this year since it was previously out-of-print.
I highly recommend you get this album, crack open the silver packaging, pop in the all-orange
disc, and enjoy!
