Finding Favour

Following the release of their first national project, a self-titled EP, through Gotee Records, Jesusfreakhideout.com's Cortney Warner quizzed Finding Favour drummer Josh Duckworth about the band's debut, teaming with Gotee, and what inspires them...
This interview took place on: 5/19/13.

  • JFH (Cortney Warner): How did you all come together and start Finding Favour?

Josh Duckworth: Blake and Allen grew up together in Georgia. They played camps and events at the time with other guys. Dustin grew up in Chile, South America as a missionary kid and moved back to Georgia. I'm originally from Texas and was the last member to join a little over a year ago through mutual contacts we had from Nashville.

  • JFH (Cortney): Was there a defining moment where you realized this was your calling, and how did you approach your career from there?

Josh: We all grew up in the same denomination leading worship. God has gifted each one of us uniquely in our talents and abilities. We've been a part of some powerful moves of God and felt His calling in that.

  • JFH (Cortney): How did your partnership with Gotee come about?

Josh: Blake was in a writing session with producer Chris Stevens. They were working on what's now our first radio single, "Slip on By." He had no idea that on that day TobyMac would be dropping by (Chris is Toby's producer, as well). Toby walks in to the studio and, after chatting for a bit, he says he wants to hear what they've been working on. Blake was hesitant--I mean it's TobyMac! Chris then played the song for Toby and said he was instantly moved by it. He then looks at Blake and says, "I want to sign you guys to Gotee."

  • JFH (Cortney): What song has the most meaning to you off of your new project?

Josh: What song doesn't have meaning in a special way to us? They all have a significant meaning to a particular time or encounter with God. From "Slip on By" and its message of not taking one moment for granted, to the song "Hallelujah We Shall Rise," a song about waiting on that day when we're going to see our loved ones in Heaven. Each song still moves us every time!

  • JFH (Cortney): What was the process of working and recording in the studio like?

Josh: We loved every minute of the creative process! We worked with three of the most talented producers in the industry. We'd go in and talk about the direction of the song and how we wanted it portrayed, starting with tracking drums and bass and then laying the rest on top. Those guys made it easy for us!

  • JFH (Cortney): What is Finding Favour's mission/message that you want to get across to listeners and fans?

Josh: That no matter who you are, where you're from or what's been done to you, God is there. He loves you more than words can express and that's our hearts desire for people to know. We just want to be a vessel for people to encounter Him.

  • JFH (Cortney): Who were your musical inspirations growing up, and who are they now?

Josh: I think we all can attest to growing up on Christian music. Southern Gospel was a big part of our inspiration too as well as Country music, Classic rock, and of course, dc Talk!

  • JFH (Cortney): Going along with the last one, who are your favorite musicians/bands?

Josh: We love Christian music. I know that may sound cliché, but it's true! We're love artists like: Mercy Me, Building 429, NeedtoBreathe, TobyMac and Jason Crabb, to name a few.

  • JFH (Cortney): Aside from music, what do you like to do in your free time?

Josh: We're all outdoorsmen. We love to fish, hunt or really anything outdoors. We also love spending time with our families and friends. That's something that is really important to us.

  • JFH (Cortney): What would you be doing right now if you weren't doing music?

Josh: We love and believe in this so much that we really couldn't imagine doing anything else. We truly believe God has His hand on this and there's no looking back.

  • JFH (Cortney): Who would your dream tour consist of? (One that you would also be a part of)

Josh: TobyMac of course! We're on the Building 429 'Give Me Jesus' Tour right now and we absolutely love those guys! There's a ton of great bands and artists we would love to tour with.

  • JFH (Cortney): Do you have any favorite movies or can't-miss TV shows you're into?

Josh: Duck Dynasty is a favorite, along with any other outdoor show!

  • JFH (Cortney): Any movies or albums that are coming out this year that you're looking forward to?

Josh: We're out on the road so much that it's tough to keep up! It's definitely a busy (and amazing) season for Finding Favour.
