Our God Reigns (Single)

Leon Lieffijn is a multi-talented singer/songwriter/you-name-it from Amsterdam. His song with Chrissy Sanderson, "To Be Near You," that released last year impressed more than one of us on staff. Lieffijn returns in 2019 with another stellar single in "Our God Reigns." Much like "To Be Near You," this song easily fits into the current mainstream pop/worship aesthetic, but manages to have a much more profound and nuanced sound. The atmospheric and ethereal nature that floats around the steady drum beat of the song provides a deeper sound -- especially when you add the background vocals into the mix. What also gives the track a lift and more unique flair is the guitar solo included as the song progresses along. Lieffijn presents a song that feels like a familiar hymn but adds such a layered musical backdrop that it feels new and exciting. The lyrics are extremely simple and repetitive, but you tend to get washed away in them. Lieffijn simply sings, "Our God reigns. Our God reigns; forever Your Kingdom reigns" throughout most of the song (other than the bridge which slightly deviates), but mixes up the delivery to reduce the feel of the repetition. Lieffijn has now impressed with two different songs using the same approach. This would be the perfect song to include in the middle of a longer worship set to allow the Spirit to move without the hindrance of remembering words or trying to intently sing along. Serious props to Leon Lieffijn for his ability to craft an incredible song out of what appears to be very little. The deep dive definitely pays off here.
