Folk pop artist Bebo Norman hasn't had too much trouble making a name for himself. Known for his thoughtful lyrics, intimate acoustic backdrops and gritty vocals, Bebo struck gold in 2000 with his even more inviting second album, BigBlueSky. In 2002, Norman continues the strike with Myself When I Am Real, blending his familiar vocals with catchy hooks to create a project begging to find a place in your personal player.
Although Norman obviously doesn't set out to do anything innovative or extraordinarily different, he puts together a collection of easy-listening songs on Myself.... Bebo gets off on the right foot the opener "Our Mystery," a relaxed pop tune that continues where BigBlueSky left off. "Beautiful You" is a sensitive track that exposes Norman's fragility, as he cries "Please don't go away/ Please don't leave me here/ I know if You don't stay/ My heart will disappear/ I need beautiful You..." "Great Light of the World" is another highlight, a thoughtful and honest prayer made powerful through Bebo's transparency as he confesses the need for our Savior.
Bebo goes for broke lyrically on Myself When I Am Real, exposing his heart and soul to listeners, set to infectious rhythms. "Falling Down" is catchy yet sensitive while "So Afraid" exposes his fear of loneliness. The honesty-soaked pop that makes up Myself When I Am Real is what makes this album so solid. Norman fans will eat this one up, while listeners just looking for something a little more transparent and personal will find these catchy tunes being spun in their players over and over.
