Sumo Surprise

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 14 tracks: 45 minutes, 4 seconds
Street Date: August 30, 1996

READER RATING:

Ghoti Hook's debut album is a fast-paced, melodic banger. Landing in '96, it follows in the footsteps of the skater punk style popularized by bands like NOFX and Blink 182 from the same area. The music follows the heavy distortion and fast beats of its punk predecessors, with a large number of songs that really stand out musically, like "Seasons," "Never" and "South Capital Street."

At times, the band could be a bit campy and silly with songs like "Tract Boy" or "Ooklah the Punk," but even those songs deliver strong drumming performances and catchy choruses. The production is a bit lacking, but to be fair, no punk band had a polished sound at that time.

Ghoti Hook really shines with songs like "South Capital Street," which discusses the difficult topic of addiction to lust, and the song "Never," dealing with the pressure to give up on your beliefs. These songs also highlight Ghoti Hook's ability to write catchy intros, melodic guitar solos and a fast-paced track that keeps you banging all day long.

Overall, Sumo Surprise is a fantastic album for anyone into punk rock music.
