Reality Check breaks into the modern rock scene with their self-titled StarSong debut. Their sound strays from most bands in the industry, yet it probably can be most appropriately described as an edgier version of dc Talk.
But to prove that they're not just a "dct-wannabe," the Talkers' own Michael Tait lends a hand with backing vocals for two tracks on this release. All the songs are driven by heavy guitars and funky rhythms, with the exception of the melodic ballad, "Know You Better." A lot of the songs are tastefully flavored with some rap vocals that are likely to be embraced by those who don't normally tolerate rap (much like with dc Talk). When vocalist Nathan Barlowe sings instead, the style is probably most reminiscent of that of pop giants PFR. The lyrics are very straight-forward and relevant for teens and young adults. Both "Plastic" and "Masquerade" touch on sour friendships and insincere people, while "Midnight Confessions" talks about struggles with lust and the desires of the flesh.
Reality Check is a strong start and I look forward to seeing what these guys will do in the future.
