39 Stripes is a Florida-based (from the Tampa area) rock band currently signed to newly formed indie label, Hollar Records. The group follows in the vein of bands such as Red, Decyfer Down, and Since October with their new release, Beyond Broken. The first thing you will notice when listening is that the production value found on a major label release is missing; there are definitely times throughout the album when this is clearly evident. A closer listen will reveal that these guys are on the right track though. While they are nowhere near the level of a band like Red, they already have a leg up on groups like Since October. And while there is nothing new on Beyond Broken, the band seems to have their own identity, which is something that most new artists in rock music lack. They know what style they want to play and they play it well. Beyond Broken has a total of 10 tracks (9 songs with an acoustic version of one track tacked on at the end). The band's potential is unveiled with songs such as "Beyond Broken" and "Perfect World," but the album's top track is the acoustic version of "Saving Me a Place." While there is work to be done, this is a band worth keeping your eye on. A positive message, some catchy hooks, and a radio friendly style of rock will have people taking notice. If you are looking for a new artist to check out, or you love to support the indie scene, these guys are worth a listen.
