Since forming in 2003 and sharing stages with headline acts such as Third Day, David Crowder, and Casting Crowns, it's only natural to take some interest in the band Unspoken, a four-piece act dropping their first release, titled Get To Me. With only five tracks and sixteen minutes of music, it's hard to label the band, but I would classify Unspoken as having a CCM worship sound with a small dose of Jimmy Needham thrown in. Are you going to hear anything exceptionally mind blowing? No, but you will hear exactly what is being played on radio stations every day. So if you're a fan of CCM and radio play, you may want to sit up and take note.
The first track is "Run To You," a typical song about relying on God for everything. The lyrics ring true, but the track carries an overly repetitive bridge and chorus. "Who You Are" and "You've Got Love For Me" are basically the same song stylistically with a slightly different lyrical focus. The other two songs bring some changes with "Just To Get To Me" giving off that Jimmy Needham vibe of soul-filled worship, while "Lost" is a beautiful, soft worship ballad.
The theme of the short sampling is wonderful and a great reminder of how great our God is, but the actual song writing leaves me wanting a little more. All in all, if you're a fan of the usual CCM radio fare, you may have found your very next EP to pick up, but if you're into something with a little more variety and creativity, then you may want to skip this one.
