Greg LaFollette may not be a household name in congregational worship, but he's worked with many who fall under that category - such as Andrew Peterson, Audrey Assad, Leslie Jordan, etc. - for quite some time. His fourth record of church music, entitled I'll Wait For You, My Love, is touted as being an album of "new old hymns." It's an apt description, but even though the hymn structure is graced with the occasional Southern-inspired small band charm, it still comes across as a harmless, and ultimately toothless, work of art.

LaFollette can't be faulted for not having a producer's ear - the tracklist is certainly full of great musical performances and timely background vocals. This is especially true on "Doxology," which expands on the classic theme with moving piano lines and three-part harmonies, as well as the bluesier tunes ("Never Alone," "Jesus Never Fails," "Even Still"). These exciting flavors that LaFollette meddles with should have been applied more generously, as the hymnal qualities of the songs are made more blasé with repetition and romantic ambience. Many of the songs feel like nothing more than bland melodies over mid-tempo pondering held together by dronelike pads. The music certainly feels congregational, and enough pieces are agreeable enough to pick up on Sundays, but that doesn't mean they have to be boring.
