The Groundwork Theory is Verbs' fourth full-length album to date and just so happens to also be his best work yet. The album starts off with a bang with "Yie," where Verbs brings out his Jamaican/Reggae roots and blows the roof off, "Here's the cold truth, when you live in His will, you feel a little more richer. That's for really for real." And it doesn't stop there; Verbs brings an entire album that is filled with great beats, smooth lyrics, and a diversity of styles, all while discussing many topics.
The Groundwork Theory is one of those rap albums where you don't skip any songs - save for maybe the one skit in the middle. And Verbs takes it all over the map here. The songs are catchy, but they don't lack seriousness. Many tracks are the "bump it in your trunk" type, but there are a few slower jams scattered through the album that have an R&B feel to them which make for a complete listen.
One highlight on the album would have to be "Glow," which talks about how awesome God is and how we need to represent Him well. The beat thumps heavy throughout the entire track while combining with a touch of soul music for a very unique blend. On other tracks, Verbs talks to the youth about how to live for God, what kind of relationships to have, and how amazingly good God is to us. One favorite is "I Know," where the artist is wondering what has happened to rap in the past few years. Taking a look at today's secular rappers, you can see where Verbs is going with this and how relevant his message is.
Verbs has matured a little more in his raps with The Groundwork Theory, perhaps getting a little more serious with his work. At the same time, the catchy beats will make it hard to sit still while listening. The production is great and Verbs never takes his eyes off of the Lord. This is one great rap disc for anyone.
