READER RATING:

Welcome to part two of the four-part EP party that Reflection Music Group is dishing out courtesy of Derek Minor. Clocking in at around twenty three minutes, this is probably not what most fans of Minor were expecting, but if you take the time to enjoy the offering that is High Above, I think you will be able to appreciate what the RMG rapper has in store for rap fans. The vibe found on this short EP can be classified as relaxed hip hop without much of that gritty rhyming that Minor has become known for. However, the tracks do all carry a heavy theme of trusting and focusing on God, which listeners are sure to love.

"Heaven's Light" and "This Morning" are slower rap tunes with a heavy dose of the aforementioned theme. They both stand as great reminders to all who need encouragement in life. "Walls" comes along featuring Oscar Urbana, who is gaining popularity for "Teacher Chronicles" and "Molly Pitcher," and the duo collabs on a smooth track about making godly impacts. "High Enough" offers a lighter, more fun track featuring the Wal-Mart superstar WHATUPRG, and it is sure to make your head nod. In the end, this is not "Empire," but it's still a good listen. There's not a lot of Minor's clever humorous shots, and the viscous rhyming is missing, but the focus is extremely positive and very God oriented. While I generally prefer the standard Derek Minor, I applaud the creativity here and recommend all hip hop fans copping this.
