In 1998, Starflyer 59 drastically changed their musical direction. For years it seemed as if there was a missing piece in the Starflyer discography. The question is, what was it? This is something that fans had discussed for years.
As we fast forward to 2004, fans can rest easy. That missing piece has been found, and it is nicely titled, I Am The Portuguese Blues (complete with solid blue cover to resemble the bands earlier releases). Fans of Starflyer 59 might want to note that this album also takes a slightly different musical direction, but there is nothing to be afraid of. Starflyer's first attempt at straight up rock and roll succeeds with flying colors.
The album starts off nicely with "Wake Up Early." The simple intro eases directly into blaring guitar riffs, which are somewhat reminiscent to that of Americana. Interestingly enough, some of the guitar riffs sound quite like those that could be heard by classic rock bands of the 80s and 90s. This sound progresses nicely throughout the rest of the album, even through the instrumental "Sound On Sound." You can't help but picture these songs being played live.
Overall, I Am The Portuguese Blues is an excellent album. Each song fits perfectly into the musical flow. The only complaint is the length, at only 27 minutes and 33 seconds it seems to wind up short. However it isn't bad for an album that fans have wanted for years. It is a great treat to tie people over until the next studio album is released later this year.
