Less than a year after their first release on Facedown records, Letter to the Exiles is back with the Still Moving, Still Breathing EP. You always have to worry when a band comes out with an EP that is this short; with only three songs and clocking in at only 12 minutes in length, it can leave you wanting more. However, this album seems to work well, but it may turn away some of the more hardcore metal fans.
This EP starts out really strong with a new song, "Step Away." This song is very heavy with lots of ambient guitar over lots of chugging breakdowns. Lyrics that are beautifully crafted set a worshipful tone to the song. "Stay Away" is a solid metal tune, but stylistically it is pretty generic.
After the first song ends, that is when the whole feeling of the EP changes to a much lighter sound. Song two is a cover of The Foo Fighters' "Best of You." When metal bands cover pop songs it can be pretty hit or miss, but this song seems to work very well with the beautiful cleans and tasteful heavy parts. The final song is an acoustic cover of "A World of Wicked Men." This song is absolutely amazing; it comes across as a gorgeous worship song that gives all glory to God.
Still Moving, Still Breathing is a very nice EP, and with two of the songs free at Facedown's website, it's worth getting it (Though, you will have to search to find them). Letter to the Exiles shows their ability to change their sound and be dynamic. The only problem is the short length. They probably should have waited a little longer and added a couple more songs--especially heavier songs--to balance out the light side a bit more.
