Having known nothing about Maylene and the Sons of Disaster just over one year ago, one could imagine my surprise and heavy salivation upon purchasing their self-titled record and seeing them in person on the Warriors 2 tour this past spring. Their music came at me, a hard rock fan, with something fresh and stimulating; energy like I've never heard before on a compact disc, and guitar work that made me feel like Lynyrd Skynyrd and early Metallica had been mated and decided to form Maylene. After nearly wearing out the disc, my anticipation piqued about a month ago when I cam to the realization, "Hey, it's got to be time for some new Maylene stuff!?"
That is when "Hell broke loose (all pun intended)." After purchasing this off of iTunes, I was again taken aback by the in-your-face, whimsical, "I'll try any 'ol lick" twangin' style that these guys exhibit on their material. Dallas Taylor, upon first listen seems more content to try and actually sing for the majority of these tracks, and to be honest; it doesn't compromise the quality at all. The only thing that kept this from being a perfect EP is the fact that the first 20 seconds of each track sounded too similar to me. Beyond that point, little similarity is noted. A great appetizer for those frenzied fans awaiting a new full-length masterpiece.
