This album was Starflyer 59's turning point from their "rock out" My Bloody Valentine days to a more pop-based sound. There is not nearly as much reverb as in previous efforts from Jason Martin's guitar, and there seems to be a lot of experimentation with synth keys.
The Fashion Focus is not the best that the band has to offer, but is a typically strong Starflyer record. Highlights include the opener "I Drive A Lot," the brilliant "Fell In Love At 22," and the more distorted, guitar-driven, "Too Much Fun."
There are a couple moments that seem to catch the band in their awkwardness of a complete sound transition from shoegazer guitar-rock, to their more modernized synth-pop sound, but for the most part, it works. A good pick up for those who enjoy anything by Starflyer 59.
