The Casting Down of Demonic Angels EP

READER RATING:

Miss Angie came onto the scene as a powerful female lead in a time when the then-developing Contemporary Christian Rock industry had only a few. After releasing two albums with Myrrh Records (the last one of those being released in 1999), she left Christian music for other pursuits, not to return to the recording studio for nearly 10 years. The Casting Down of Demonic Angels EP is Miss Angie's first new project since her return.

Any returning fans looking for the crunchy guitars from her earlier work won't find any here. Instead, they will find a fresh batch of mostly programmed pop songs. God-focused relational lyrics and catchy hooks pervade these songs while Miss Angie's vocals sound nearly identical to her earlier recordings.

The EP begins with "Spiritual Temperature," a worshipful, highly programmed song about God's courtship of the believer's love. "Stay Afloat" is a peppy keyboard-driven pop song about the Lord being a Christian's solid rock in times of trouble. Sitting at track number three is the single, "Restore." It's smack in the middle of this album and comes across as a heavily mixed club-style pop song. The second half of the EP begins with the bluesy "Trip to Heaven." It's a poignant song that asks the listener if they are ready to go to heaven, with lyrics to challenge like: "Wouldn't you like to see His Glory?/Wouldn't you like to see His Face?/Wouldn't you like to meet King Jesus?/Wouldn't you like to leave this place?" The acoustic driven "God Song" closes out this effort, and while this song has a beautiful melody, it sounds like a low quality recording, which can't help but detract from an otherwise strong album.

There is a lot of Christian music being put out in recent years by artists who are no longer signed to a record label but continue on with fan support. Many musicians are also out there just releasing music by themselves, and that's a good thing. The problem is sometimes the music becomes less than what the listener hopes for in terms of quality. This is not the case with this indie effort from Miss Angie. While the EP is only available digitally, and only features 5 songs, I say it's definitely worth trekking a bit off the beaten path to give it a listen.
