Hoping for tobyMac! He really deserves it!
Is the GMC going to be broadcasting this online on Sunday also? I don't have the channel and I want to watch it so badly!
I believe that www.gmclife.com will be broadcasting the Dove Awards on Sunday....
Over an HOUR since the last award? C'mon, GMA - yer killin' us! :-)
That was a long wait for a disappointing result. Agree with Allyson on her picks!
I agree with Allyson+Reed. Fiction Family should have AT LEAST been nominated for 'New Artist'. Did anyone really think they wouldn't be disappointed with the overall winners??
Hello Hurricane is 'Album of the Year'!! IMO
Whatever happened to Nichole Nordeman? I was expecting to see her on the list of performers and was surprised when she didn't show up. I hope she hasn't called it quits.
Hmm...Album of the Year...For me, it's either Hello Hurricane or The Long Fall Back to Earth. Hard choice.
This is the Dove AWARDS.... isn't it?
Oh well. Wish I could be there!;)
YES!!! NTB!!! My fav winning...that's weird...could the Dove 'pickers' actually be getting smarter as the years go by? We'll see...
As far as Jars' album, truly an UNDERwhelming album IMO. Highly disappointed with it...
CCrowns' AOY win only highlights the positive of NTB's GOY win! WOO-HOO!!! Giddy Up!!! :)
NO! NO! NO!!
Seriously, Toby just put out one of the most awesome albums Christian music has ever seen.
I can't believe it. CC is highly overrated.
Thanks JFH for keeping us in the loop with your live blog coverage! I don't share your love for Needtobreathe, but there were some nice surprises (Jars, Crowder, Francesca, Mess of Me) that made up for it. Until next year: blessings!
Yeah, thanks for blogging.
Would somebody please explain all of this animosity toward Casting Crowns? They deserve every award they've received and more. They may not be the most innovative band, but they truly understand and live-out their ministry on and off the stage. To me, that's what matters.
Plus, their album sales speak pretty loudly, too. Obviously their music is striking a chord with the masses.
So, to Casting Crowns I say, congratulations! I hope you win many more!

Wow! These are great awards! I think every one went to the perfect artist this year!
Thanks for the live coverage.
Awards just collect dust on shelf anyway and if the above picture is the actual award itself its kinda ugly anyway. These awards shouldn't be the way people measure success. Skillet's fans and all the other artist that got snubed's fans know that they are amazing
Yeah, apparently CC is turning into this generations Petra...the gift that keeps on giving...
Speaking of overrated, as it was mentioned before, I don't think Sidewalk Prophets is all that great... >_> My dad got the CD; I HAVE listened to it and was extremely disappointed. The sound was like every "hit" that's out there, an annoying attempt at pop attempting to be rock, and the lyrics sounded unorigional... That's why I like Abandon a lot, cause most of their lyrics are all just... different.
I'm kinda upset that they (Abandon) didn't win, but they WERE fairly beaten by RED.(I love them even more after seeing them on tour Sunday!) So, kudos to RED for winning, though I didn't like half of the other choices... Though I'm still pondering why Abandon wasn't in the Rock/Contemporary group?
I'm glad that there is a lot of Christian music in different genres going around, but seriously, some of this stuff just flat out sucks. Needtobreathe is most likely the most boring thing on Christian radio, and they might as well have renamed this to the "KLove" awards, because the only songs/artists that ever win are the ones on their constant rotation for whatever reason. I'm hard pressed to turn on the radio and hear ANYTHING other than Brandon Heath or the pledge drive. Where's the variety in the music scene?
What is your problem with Sidewalk Prophets? They have been working hard all year, wowing people all over the nation on two great tours, dropping a sweet #1 single, not to mention their stellar album. Do you have some sort of vendetta against them? They are, hands down, most deserving New Artist of the Year! Also, By Your Side isn't too old. It was released in '09 which makes it perfect and the right choice for Song of the Year!
Casting Crowns is not a bad group. However, they have won group of the year 5 years in a row until NeedtoBreathe won it. Then they get artist of the year instead. That is 6 years in a row they got a major award. NO BAND should get that type of notification. Every time I turn on the radio it is Casting Crowns. The funny thing is, it is usually form their first or second album. Their new songs get less play then their old stuff. Also their music sounds the same on each record. Just think about this stat: Casting Crowns has won a dove award every year they have been around. The Newsboys (also serious and produce great music) have not won an award since 1999. Skillet who had a top 50 tour has won 1 dove award. The GMC seems to fall in love with certain artist and votes for them every year. But it was nice to see some bands get recognized this year.
John and all the rest,
Wowing are lyrics like this... "I am the thorn in His crown, I am the sweat from His brow, I am the nail in His wrist, I am Judas' kiss." Anyone willing to be that open and honest deserves accolades.
Wowing is also this, "I would crawl upon my knees, just to know the joy of suffering." What a beautiful sentiment.
Both these "wowing" well-crafted lines are from Sidewalk Prophets songs. It seems like most everyone on this site is so judgemental. You bash bands like SWP and CC and Tenth Ave. when God has given them a song, a passion and a vision that is reaching so many for Christ. Just because the rhythm and sound are different from what you normally listen to doesn't mean it you should disrespect. Check an artist out COMPLETELY, not just by one single, before you trash them.
As for Abandoned... I met them and they were more concerned about doing their hair than hanging out with the campers. That is from experience.

Daniel -- They might have well meaning and worshipful lyrics, but that doesn't mean the art is beautiful or anything grand. We're big on the whole package -- not just lyrics. So many artists are mediocre musically but the ministry is there. We understand that. We're not telling people not to listen to these bands. We realize they have a ministry that works. But for art -- for artists (that's why they're called "artists") -- we want to encourage some growth. Something unique. SWP are not that. Period.
And we never judge music by singles. We don't care about singles. In fact, that's the point I was trying to make to Steven who was judging NTB based on their singles. Their song "Garden" is just amazing lyrically.
Anyway, I don't expect everyone to believe that music and lyrics are equally important. I understand that some place so much more importance on ministry. That's fine. But JFH wants to encourage growth artistically as well. That's just our convictions (especially mine). If others don't agree, that's fine. Agree to disagree. :)
I believe that art is an important and beautiful thing... trust me. And as a vocal artist Sidewalk Prophets has one of the best. Dave can sing almost anyone out there into the ground! Just go see them live and tell me he can't! Their chords might not be the hardest thing to play, and the songs may sound like 90's rock, but that is great for me. Is it completely new? No, but why isn't something that sounds wonderfully fimiliar and has a lot of heart and beauty behind it art? The answer is that it is. I never said they were cutting-edge or barnd spankin original, but Sidewalk Prophets are artists, lyrically, vocally, and musically. True artists.
I agree on the singles part and trust me NeedtoBreath are AMAZING artists in every sense of the word. But as far as originality, they sound like Kings of Leon... which according to your definition makes them not an artist. But trust me, they are.

Daniel -- I know what you're saying, but I still disagree about SWP. ... and I did see them live. Wasn't impressed. *shrug* But alas, to each their own.
"This is not..." -- Ha, it was weird SCC didn't win anything. Was he nominated for anything? And Skillet should have won SOMEthing I would think.
Daniel - you're going to have to let it go bro. Ha. I saw them perform 1 song last year during GMA and I saw them perform their Winter Jam set. Completely underwhelming. Dave can do a good job with a Michael Jackson impression, but otherwise their music and his voice do zilch for me. Sorry, man! Not feelin' em even remotely. That's not to say they won't make some good tunes that'll grab me in the future of course. However, until then...
why is casting crowns SO overrated??? someone tell me...
RED and Brain Welch on stage together???? AWESOME!!!
However, the main reason why I don't usually watch 'award' shows is it lacks EVERYTHING! Not one time did anybody mention Pillar, Thousand Foot Krutch, As I Lay Dying, UnderOath, Demon Hunter, and I could make an endless list of more than deserving artists who put everything out on the line to make great music for their fans. Don't get me wrong, I listen to Skillet, KJ, Toby, and so on, but it seems that even Christian music has their 'mainstream' favorites, forgetting some of the greatest to hit the stage.
I'm really hoping Blindside doesn't disappoint with there 'comeback' album later this year. I've missed those guys greatly!
Man...Skillet should've got Group of the Year and Rock Song! Red pretty much deserved Rock album, and Crowns Artist, plus Skillet deserved a Dove for their Hero video.
