Decyfer Down
Crash EP

In 2006, the hard hitting rock band Decyfer Down released their debut album End of Grey through SRE Recordings. Since, prior to the arrival of guitarist, Chris Clonts, they had been around since 1999 under the name of "Allysonhymn," this band is no stranger to the mainstream music industry. Playing with acts such as Puddle of Mudd and Breaking Benjamin, needless to say, it comes to no surprise that the result of their style is very similar to their mainstream counterparts. However, this doesn't always come off as a good thing, for Christian music is known for its copycat ways. Decyfer Down makes up for this with solid lyrics and over the edge catchy guitar riffs, all of which is evident in this three track EP, Crash. With it, Decyfer Down gives fans a little taste of their upcoming album scheduled for a February, 2009 release.

The first song, "Crash," is probably the band's heaviest and finest song to date. "Best I Can," on the other hand, is an example of that all too familiar radio friendly cycle. The dull but encouraging lyrics somewhat make up for it. In spite of that, it's a rather solid song. The third and last track on the EP, "Now I'm Alive," is a song that sounds a lot like "Walking Dead" from End of Grey, proving that the upcoming album probably isn't going to be a huge leap from their debut in terms of sound. That isn't a bad thing considering it was exceedingly satisfying, especially in the quality of production, which remains a major factor of Decyfer Down's efforts.

All in all, fans will truly enjoy this EP and look forward to their upcoming full-length album, Crash. As for rock fans in general, there is enough to enjoy about these new songs to garner radio success. Regardless of the minor off-putting, for three dollars, I highly recommend the whole set.
