After parting ways with Word Records earlier this year, Building 429 returns to the industry with their fourth album. Being the AC rock band's first release under INO Records, it is evident why this album is simply self-titled.
Although it's clear that Building 429 wants to try and "start over" with a new label, this album unfortunately only sticks to the same formula used in their previous work. That's not to say that their slick AC rock formula doesn't work for them, though. Songs like the single "End Of Me," "Overcome," and "Shoulder" are the best tracks following this formula. Another highlight would be the opener, "Not Gonna Let You Down," which is more rock driven and reminiscent of their Rise album. Also, the gentle piano-based "Always" is possibly the best track on Building 429. The lyrics feel inspired and are sung with a passion that most of the record's other tracks are lacking. However, once the album reaches its midpoint, things wind down. Here, songs like "Your Love Goes On," "Coming Home," and "Bring You Back" seem to be monotonous and stale musically.
The weakest point of Building 429 lies in the lyrics. The band sticks to the same clichés that many other artists these days use. There is nothing particularly unique or even interesting on this album at all lyrically. However, a few of the songs do have their moments, like the aforementioned "Always," and "Oxygen."
All in all, this is not a bad effort from Building 429. However, most of the tracks here sound just like any other Building 429 song you've heard before. Their formula works for a while, but it's time to try something new.
