Article One is a band that was born out of a family of musicians and a mildly-successful Christian solo artist. The two brothers, Nathan and Matt Piche, started the band in 2003 with Dave De Smit playing drums, touring until they released their debut self-titled album in 2007. Now, adding bassist Mark Laidman, the group seems to have grown a bit after a less-than-stellar debut and are ready to release their second album, Colors and Sounds.
Sophomore records are usually hit or miss, especially if a debut has either been strongly accepted or just collected dust on store shelves. With Colors and Sounds, Article One shows a definite push for the better. Their self-titled was full of slow, mostly forgettable violin and guitar-driven tracks that didn't really give that "wow" factor, and much of those violin and guitar influences rock their sophomore effort, but in a much stronger way. It still doesn't have that unique feel (much of their music can be compared to MercyMe or even a more alternative version of Sanctus Real), however some tracks stand out as the band shows some great potential to go far. Songs like "If The World Gives Up," the enthusiastic intro "Without You (I'm Not Alright), the title track, and the smooth yet upbeat feel of "Searchlights" really give Article One a place to stand in a music world full of imitators.
During their debut, it seemed that Article One was afraid to let loose and have fun with their music. Something must have happened when producer Tedd T (Mute Math) got into the studio with them, because many of the songs have an in-your-face feeling, and it also gives a feeling that the guys love what they're doing, something that is often apparent to listeners. With fourteen tracks (three of which are instrumentals) and a good amount of energy on almost all of them, Article One has an impressive sophomore record on their hands. CCM fans will find a lot to love here, as many of the tracks are radio friendly, but all in all this seems like the debut that the band should have had, and is definitely well worth a listen.
