With soaring piano melodies and strong vocals, We Shot The Moon presents a solid power pop album, even if it lacks much spiritual profundity. Fear and Love gets off to a great start with "The Water's Edge" and "Sway Your Head," two pop tracks with great choruses and catchy hooks. Piano driven and very addictive, "Sway Your Head" offers the greatest example of the album's generally optimistic theme.
Likable choruses can also be found in "LTFP," "Upon Waking She Found Herself a Cougar," "Faces," and "On Your Way," although all songs offer pop sounds that are easy to bob your head to, but will quickly be forgotten. The gradual buildup in "Perfect Time" really draws the listener in. Unfortunately, there are some tracks that lack any lyrical and musical depth whatsoever, such as "In The Blue," "Julie," and "Perfect Time." It is extremely easy to imagine "Julie" as the theme song for every love-struck adolescent male, and the sappiness definitely goes over the top.
The greatest critique of Fear and Love would be lack of meaning and spiritual depth in nearly all of the tracks, with a few exceptions. The weak ballad "Tunnel Vision" offers a story of straying from where you belong, but finding your way back. The vocal strength in "Hope" brings a very powerful message of being "ready for fear, love and everything in between," although it never addresses the need for Christ to be the one to give you this hope. Closing the album, "Please Shine" presents the band's beautiful piano abilities in a very solid ending. We Shot The Moon clearly has remarkable musical talent, and one can only hope that future works will lead to greater maturity in spiritual lyrics.
