READER RATING:

Daniel Bashta might be best known for his song "Like A Lion," made famous by the Newsboys, but Bashta is more than a songwriter. He also leads worship at Atlanta's RiverStone Church, where My Resurrection (Live) was recorded. The live album features a mix of songs previously recorded (like "Praise the Invisible" and "Praise the Lord-Rejoice") and new tunes ("Bellows of Praise" and "Drenched in Love"). The songs are creative and revolve around themes of gratitude and praise to God for His love and gift of salvation through Jesus.

The night starts off quietly enough with "Thank You Jesus," an easy-going praise song with a country feel. It's a surprising start and gives hope of creativity as it is not a bombastic opening like you might expect. The next three songs, "Bellows of Praise," "Drenched in Love" and "Praise the Lord-Rejoice," provide a nice run of songs that are easy to learn and, carried along with the audience, sweep you into a proper mind for worship. "Praise the Invisible" and "Spontaneous Melody" slow the pace down but rely too much on repetition, which works better if you're in the audience and not casually listening to it in a different context. "Costly" puts things back on track as Bashta steps aside to let his sister, Harvest Parker, sing a song that feels more personal, like a quiet prayer to God. With the audience listening in silence, it makes for a surprising moment on the album and draws your attention, leaving "Seas of Crimson" to end the experience on a high note, underscoring the album's theme.

The trick of a live album, especially a worship one, is how well the energy of the show translates through the speakers. My Resurrection (Live) does this well. The crowd roars along with Bashta in praise, the quality is clear, and if you close your eyes you can imagine yourself there. Aside from some overly repetitious parts, Bashta's live album makes a compelling case for his importance in the worship community of the church today. My Resurrection (Live) is creative, exhilarating worship released just in time for Lent and Easter.
