The Longing's self-titled debut album is what one has come to expect from a rock/worship band. It has vertical lyrics, polished beats, and a mix of new and old worship songs. What sets The Longing apart are the breathy vocals of lead singer Jason Ingram. Ingram sings each word with conviction and honesty, inviting listeners to come and worship their Creator along with him.
The album begins with the passionate cry, "Heal the Land." One immediately begins to draw comparisons to David Crowder Band and Delirious. However, The Longing fails to be as original as either band. That being said, the album is still a cut above many worship albums. Each song is different enough to keep the listener's attention. The hymns covered are re-worked to give them a modern flair without losing their integrity.
While The Longing does not break new territory, the band is definitely talented and comes across as very authentic. Each song on the album could easily be used in congregational worship. Lyrically, the band is honest and focused on man's relationship with Christ. Ingram's vocals carry the songs and give them an intimate feel. Fans of David Crowder Band, Delirious, or those who are just looking for an above average worship album need to look no further than The Longing.
