The name Matt Crocker might not immediately ring a bell for everyone, but his songs certainly should. Tracks like "Scandal of Grace," "This I Believe (The Creed)," and "I Surrender" have become modern worship anthems, penned and performed during his years with Hillsong UNITED. Now, Crocker steps into the spotlight with interlude, his debut solo project - a heartfelt, Christ-centered offering that feels both familiar and refreshingly personal.
From the very first track, interlude carries echoes of UNITED's signature sound, yet it also introduces something distinctly Crocker. The album opens with "Sleepless," a gentle and atmospheric track layered with tender harmonies that feel like a lullaby. Brooke Ligertwood's harmonies elevate the song beautifully, setting the tone for what's to come.
"Highest" leans more into the worship anthems fans of UNITED would recognize: roaring synths, dynamic drums, and a soaring melody that opens the track wide. Then there's "PRAiiiSE," one of the album's clear standouts. With its catchy instrumental hook and deeply moving lyrics about the nature of God, it's a track I'll keep coming back to. Crocker sings, "You've become my shelter / refuge hiding place / even when the past still haunts me, where's my shame / there's no other song for me / I'll sing You praise." It's the kind of lyric that feels both intimate and congregational.
Songs like "It All Belongs to You," "Amazing Love," and "Jesus" could easily find a home in churches around the world. The album also offers moments of variation. "Skeletons" changes the pace with an upbeat, groove-driven sound that feels unique to the album itself, and it works. It's another favorite of mine, showing Crocker's willingness to push sonic boundaries without losing the message. "Underneath My Skin" strips it all back. It's just Crocker, his guitar, and a raw vocal performance that captures humility to the one true God, "And now I, oh I / Lord I'd be nothing without You / I'd be nothing without You."
All in all, interlude is a strong and sincere debut. It's not just a side project; it's a collection of songs born from deep love and devotion, shaped by years of writing and worshipping. I, for one, can't wait to see what's next for Matt Crocker. If you're looking for an alternative to today's typical Christian music landscape, this is a project worth diving into.
