In 2008, we were introduced to Inpop's pop/soul band Newworldson. Since then, the band has been touring with the Newsboys all around the world, and now, two years later, we're looking at their latest self-titled sophomore release.

Before playing the first track there a lot of expectations. Newworldson's last project was definitely a unique sound, mixing the sounds of reggae and soul together into a fun, energetic musical genre. Newworldson doesn't disappoint, and the funk begins with the opening track "You Set the Rhythm." With a strong bass lead introduction, you can't help but tap your foot along to the rhythm. That feeling carries on throughout the project, with other songs such as "Do You Believe in Love?" and "Commander."

In preparation for the project's release, "There is a Way" was released as a single. Since then, the song has been climbing the charts, and for good reason. The song itself is a slower pop ballad sounding similar to music from artists such as Michael Buble and Maroon5. It uses a number of memorable hooks, one using the famous words of Jesus in John 14:6 ("There is a way, the truth and the life and the way"). The song reminds listeners that God is always there, and always ready to help us along the way.

Every so often you come across a song that changes things around a little. In the track called "In Your Arms," for example, we're introduced to a more British pop/rock sound. This song works well for the band, but it's not hard to imagine another band (All Star United springs to mind) covering this song. A little later we then find "That's Exactly," which has a stronger guitar riff sound, making it stand out from the rest of the project.

The other main style of music on this record is the traditional blues ballad, making use of jazz organs and slick guitar work, bringing the tempo of the project down. "Rocky Road" provides the first break from the action-packed beginning. We then see another, more Latin-feeling, break in the song "O Lament." A final ballad, "Weary," ends the album and brings it all to a fully rounded finish.

Overall Newworldson is a great follow up from 2008's effort, and the guys have shown they still have the groovy, funk driven rock in the bag. If there was one suggestion for the next project, it would be that the guys continue to expand their range of musical styles. Those who have heard and enjoyed Newworldson before will love this album. For those who are new to the band, it's hard to compare this project to any other. For this reason, it's worth a listen from anyone who is interested at all in something a little bit different.
