Straight out of Alpharetta, Georgia, INO Records' newest recruit is sure to impress. Fee (aptly named for singer and writer Steve Fee) has a great track record, getting props from some of Christian music fan's favorites, including Mark Hall and MercyMe. Their debut album, We Shine, incorporates David Crowder-esque programming and sincere rock/worship elements.
The first track, "All of Because of Jesus," sounds downright techno and akin to sounds of The Panic Division or Paulson. The title track takes on much of the same style, with upbeat drums and excellent synth/guitar mix. The next song, "Glorious One," is ultimately destined for Christian radio and takes on an excellent Chris Tomlin style. From here, the album slows down a bit with "Burn for You" and "Beautiful the Blood," both using rock ballads to feature their worship lyrics.
The techno rock and upbeat sounds return on tracks like "Lift High" and "Broadcast," but the dominant style of the latter half of the record is definitely slower worship. However, Fee seems to do both well, although seldom does a song ever get even close to the tranquility of someone like duo Shane & Shane.
Musically, Fee may not be breaking many barriers, for any style they incorporate has quite been done before - in Christian music or otherwise. While listening, you may wonder, "Hasn't David Crowder been here already?" This may be so, but when you go deeper, you realize that the combination of amazing lyrics and the sweeps of electronic rock, along with excellent worship ballads, adds up to more than the sum of its parts.
