Urban Rescue
Wild Heart EP

Genre(s): Pop / Worship
Album length: 5 tracks: 20 minutes, 11 seconds
Street Date: January 29, 2016

READER RATING:

Urban Rescue have been silently building a following within the worship scene for a couple of years now. Having independently released a full-length and a follow-up EP, the band are now preparing to release their second EP under Rend Collective's newest label, Rend Family Records. Being the label's first release, does Wild Heart provide a strong, even unique, beginning?

The EP sets off with a steady build up of pounding drums and electronic infused keyboards with the opening track, "Recreate." The overall sound of this track, and the entire EP, is a generous mixture of the joyous, acoustic based anthems Rend Collective are known for, and the electronic influence of artists like Hillsong Young and Free. While the style isn't too uncommon among modern worship, the band manages to pull it off with the skill of a veteran act. The title track is the strongest example of this; featuring rhythmic clapping and well-placed choir vocals. "Open Hands" is another highlight in the same vein, with lyrics based on the theme of surrender; "Empty me of everything, so there's nothing left but You, I just want to live for You with open hands....for your glory, lifted high to you." Songs like these prove just how creative these guys can be. However, there are a couple of tracks that miss this mark. Lead single "Kaleidoscope" offers up a tiring amount of "Woah's" in the chorus, and "His Name" isn't all that interesting, musically speaking.

With that said, there are some genuinely good things to say about this release. Spots of creativity shine through on more than a few occasions and provide a solid promise of more to come. Wild Heart is a release any fan of the band, or of Rend Collective, will do well to pick up.
