It doesn't take more than a few stanzas of Austin & Lindsey Adamec's self-titled debut EP for the listener to recognize that the Adamec duo know what they are doing. With strong individual careers from which to draw experience, it is unsurprising that the couple's first release unfolds with apparent effortlessness.
"Walk On Waves," the title track and opening song, is an obvious radio hit. Sensibly released almost two weeks before the rest of the EP, the song delivers every ounce of spirit that the pair proclaim has been essential to both their relationship and the decision to undertake this current project. And, while potentially lacking the same degree of inspiration, the rest of the release avoids becoming a top heavy offering by focusing on meaning over musicianship. "It Is Finished," "Maker Of Miracles" and "Lost in You" each highlight the joy that can be found in faithfully following the footsteps of Christ.
For instance, on the last of the aforementioned tracks, the couple sings sweetly in a frequently utilized vocal duet, "…I'm swept away / I'm yours to take / My heart is found / Lost in you." "Infinite Grace" functions to maintain message and tone, while the bonus track, "Oh Liberty," surprises with an upbeat close. All in all, Austin & Lindsey Adamec EP is tailor-made for mainstream Christian music. Designed to slide seamlessly into a radio playlist or find a place in contemporary service set lists, each song stays simple to fulfill such purposes. So what's the catch? This is the unfortunate flipside to the Adamecs' expertise: the EP is safe. By constructing modest chord progressions and harmonies, Austin and Lindsey write the likeable songs that they know they can. Consequently, with each spin of the album, I longed for a break from the conventional, a refrain that boasted the kind of unevenness that unbridled creativity often imparts. Luckily, I believe such performances are on the horizon.
At the end of the day, the strength of the combined vocals of these two talented musicians, and the dedication to the faithful delivery of a heartfelt testimony, validate a thoughtful and relevant release. Whether during worship service, on the car radio, or at the top of your favorite playlist, I expect we will all be hearing more from Austin & Lindsey Adamec very soon.
