After last year's original Church Clothes mixtape, Lecrae turned many heads as he bluntly spoke controversial words that some loved and some didn't. Well, he's back with his second mix tape installment, aptly called Church Clothes, Vol. 2. Lecrae is constantly spitting rhymes whether it's for his own albums, collaborations with other artists, or free mix tapes for wanting ears. Yes, Church Clothes, Vol. 2 is free and that alone means you should check it out (the free version features a DJ Cannon while you can purchase a version without Cannon on iTunes). But let's see what's inside those tunes shall we?
The mixtape opens with "Co-Sign Pt. 2," echoing Lecrae's opening for the original Church Clothes, making it a perfect selection for the follow-up. "Believe" follows with a blunt approach, asking people what it takes for them to believe with lyrics begging, "What it take to make you believe? More fire from the sky, another parting of the sea?" The next few tracks are standard fare and speak about temptations, getting high off the Creator, and musicians selling lies while boasting great beats and nice spitting. For those who were expecting another round of controversy, they might be left hanging. "Round Of Applause" features secular hip hop artist B.O.B. and delivers a great message of beating the odds which can be heard in the lyrics, "They told us we was nothing, now I know they hate it. Round of applause, round of applause. Congratulations, we beat them odds." Lecrae and B.O.B. spit honest words laid over nice beats throughout the entire listen, and the word "controversial" didn't come to my mind, but that's about as close as he gets this time around.
The remainder of the mixtape has solid material in tracks about on focusing on the Creator above all in ""My Whole Life Changed," and dealing with the struggles that so many go through in "Hang On." Overall, I tend to think that DJ Cannon drops his own name way too much and not every single track is great, but it's otherwise quality rap, it's free, and Lecrae is speaking what's on his heart. There is absolutely no reason for any fan of hip hop to not go pick this up.
