Jim Anthony Band is a pop/rock quintet offering a hybrid of styles and similarities. The band's self-titled indie debut opens with "All I Need," immediately sending the listener a strong Matchbox 20 vibe, offering little different in approach or delivery. The following track "The Race," however, immediately switches gears to an edgier rock sound with a southern flare similar to Atlanta rockers Third Day. Unfortunately, "Little Bit Of Faith" and "Press On" follow with a sound strongly similar to Matchbox in vocals and instrumentation. On the upside, the JAB is without a doubt talented at what they do. Their heart is for ministry and this is evident through their lyrics that range straight-up worship to themes of prayerful urgency.
Jim Anthony Band's debut is an impressive effort, but the album only really stands out when the band pursues a different sound from the norm. Tracks like "The Race" are more experimental for the guys and it'd be great to hear more from them in that direction. Fans of Matchbox, Dave Matthews, Jeremy Camp, Todd Agnew and the folk-rock genre will most likely enjoy the Jim Anthony Band.
