Two years ago, Starflyer 59 released Lust for Gold, an amazing return to form while also sprinkling in a bit of their more modern sound. And in true SF59 fashion, it was of course followed by an EP. This one being titled Disappointed, a name which has been used in the small amount of advertising to be a tongue-in-cheek, self-depricating phrase.
But this EP is anything but disappointing. While being on the shorter side, sporting only 3 tracks, it takes the Starflyer you know and speeds things up, which is a welcome suprise compared to the usual low-tempo sound that has been the norm for years.
One way to describe this EP is taking the noise and grunginess of Gold, crunch and slight sass of I Am The Portuguese Blues, and the modern production and sound of Lust for Gold and shoving them into a blender on high speed. It may go by fast, but it leaves you needing to experience it again.
If there is one complaint this reviewer has, it's that the lyrics are not very complex, and are a bit repetitive in the verses. Although I understand the sentiment of the lyrics being simply a part of the song and not as important to Martin, it can make songs a little bit more predictable. Two of the three songs follow the standard Starflyer formula of a verse, followed by a chorus, an instrumental break, then a slightly different verse followed by a chorus or two to bring it to a close.
Overall, Disappointed E.P. is a very solid trio of songs to tide listeners over for the next album, which has already been revealed to be in the works. It will hopefully be a welcome addition to the discography, and serve as a sneak peak into what is to come.
