Michael Sweet has always been known for his exceptional voice that we can safely say is original in the CCM universe, beginning with his first appearance on Stryper's The Yellow and Black Attack in 1984. From there, Stryper would open several doors for the Christian hard rock and metal genres with their popular platinum-selling To Hell with the Devil. Transformations took place with Stryper after the release of Against the Law in 1990, and we would not see another album from Stryper for almost 15 years. During this time, Micheal released his first solo album in 1994 with a self-titled project. This reviewer was able to see him in concert that same year, and it was quite a sight to see his new group along with his bandmate, Dennis Cameron (Angelica). Through his solo music, Michael was able to break new ground in a different genre. Now, Sweet is entering a new chapter where he is discovering a new sound again 32 years later with his latest release, The Master Plan.
The first track, "The Master Plan," begins with a nice atmospheric introduction. The song focuses on the characteristics of what God wants for all of us: "When we find / Where we began and turn / From where we've been / Then we may learn / Of all the beauty / In the Master Plan." The next song will take you back to a late 70s/ early 80s feeling, but it is those types of rhythmic sounds that are expected from bands like Boston, Foreigner, and Journey. And being that Michael is a huge fan of those acts, it is not shocking to hear music here that recalls that era of sound. The lyrical content of the song is simple, but easy to dive into, "If He is for us / Who is against us / His power is immeasurable /So I will stand (stand) / On The holy word (word) / It's always incomparable." "Stronger" continues the flow in the similar direction, but we are reminded of some of Stryper's classic ballads in the chorus, "When I'm with You longer / You're more than every wonder." The fourth track begins with a slower cadence and highlights Michael's astonishing range as it heightens with each line. This might become a fan favorite as it is a simple song to perceive, yet the implications are especially important as it pertains to hope and reassurance.
"You Lead I'll Follow" is very reminiscent of the feel-good theme songs that were set for films and shows of the mid-70s generation; it has also been carried over into new generations due to the admiration. Just think of an ABBA song with Michael's vocals. Like many of the songs from that time, it is noticeably short -- coming in at only 2 minutes and 39 seconds -- due to the constraints of 45 RPM records back in those days.
"Again" is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard from Michael Sweet. It is a very moving song where people who have dealt with loss can relate to its implications. I will admit that my eyes were a little misty when I first heard the tune and focused on the lyrics, "You left us too soon / Leaving unhealing wounds / The pain's still compiling / As we learn to move / There are things in this world / We may never comprehend / As we spin, as we twirl / It's so hard to mend / I'll hold onto that day /When I look at you and say / How are you my friend / I knew I'd see you Again." "Faith" is not as memorable as the other songs, but it delivers a nice chorus and showcases Michael's elite guitar skills. "Worship You" will remind the listener of the early 90s when we were still hanging on to the 80s, with the likes of Idle Cure, Shout, and even Petra, before it all faded out.
It would be an understatement to say that Michael has produced a lot of music in his career. This will be his eleventh solo album, and that is not including the the collaboration albums with the extremely talented George Lynch (as Sweet & Lynch), as well as seventeen albums with Stryper. I believe Michael could win over new fans with this album due to it having distinctive styles without focusing on the signature metal music that he is usually associated with. Fans who appreciate his exceptional vocals will especially enjoy this release, especially the ballads that echo his performance on "Together as One" from Soldiers Under Command (1985). The Master Plan is a commendable addition to one's collection, and you don't necessarily have to be a Stryper fan to appreciate it.
