Adoremus (Latin for "we adore") is an indie rock band from Toledo, Ohio. What started as the solo project of drummer/singer Ben Vasko has now turned into a three-piece band. Last year, they released their debut album Weaving Fire, but now have already returned with a brand new single in 2021. The band's sound on the new track is alt/rock in nature. "Do You Love Me? (Regressing)" is highlighted by a catchy guitar riff that plays through a majority of the song. The brief intro, the verses, and the turnarounds all feature the riff and the chorus even features a modified version of it as well. While it is used a lot, it never feels overbearing and some added nuances in the rest of the music actually draws the attention away from the repeats. The bridge offers a nice change of pace and something completely different to break things up a little more. Vasko opens the song with, "Feeling like I'm regressing; fading in and out of depression. I'm trying to hold some semblance of control. The Holy Spirit escapes me; haven't Your presence lately. Feeling alone; no signs of hope." The song's lyrics speak of fear, doubt, and struggles throughout. These relatable lyrics are met by the chorus, "Do You love me as much as I love You? And do You think of me as much as I think of You? I'm hanging by a string. I want Your everything, but do You want me? Do You want me?" The song shares a situation in which a lot of us have been in at some point in our lives and the cry out to God in the chorus is earnest. It's a song of yearning with a sense of feeling lost, but it's authentic.
"Do You Love Me? (Regressing)" has an early-to-mid-2000's vibe musically and works if you were into the alt/rock and emo scenes of the day. Everything about the new single feels like an improvement from last year. The overall sound and production have both improved greatly and the more rock inspired sound is a nice addition. Weaving Fire has some good tunes, but "Do You Love Me? (Regressing)" is the kind of song that will get you excited for new music. I'll be eager to hear where Adoremus goes from here, and look forward to what they release next.
