The last time we heard from Less Than Greater Than was back in 2018 with their EP, entitled Let It Breathe. It seems that three years and a pandemic hasn't stopped this Oklahoma City band, though. In August of 2021, the band released a brand new single. "Undercover" is an incredibly fun listen from start to finish. The song is a fast-tempo rocking number that never lets up until the end of the song. The first verse features a palmed muted guitar, but the rest of the song contains big, open, and driving guitars with a great sounding little hook for the turnaround. On top of it all, there is a nice guitar solo featured here. In fact, my favorite musical moment in the track is actually the drum breakdown/fill featured about halfway through the solo. It's a good complement and sets the guitar part off well. Lyrically, the song is about talking to God in the hard times -- even when it's difficult to know what to say. A lyric like, "I try and I try and I try, but the words don't come out right" is the perfect set up for the chorus. Chris Roberts sings, "And I feel like I wanna give up run away, but You keep pulling me back to Your face. And I know You're listening to every word I say even before they come out of my mouth. Just a simple little prayer." The song ends on the chorus as the music cuts out and vocals slow down for that final line before the drums and guitars kick back in for a big crescendo to finish it out.
Less Than Greater Than have put together an excellent first taste for what could be to come next musically. Everything on the new track is highly enjoyable. The music is rocking and fun and the lyrics are super relatable. The production is also a step up from their last EP as well. There really aren't any complaints to be had at all. If you are a fan of rock music, "Undercover" could be a song that speaks to you on a few levels. Enjoy this one as we wait to see what the band does next.
