07. Head Held High

Dear Future, Come Get Me
by The Fold

How could something so lost catapult back into my life? You were just right, not a day had passed in our eyes. I was strong on the outside, a calming stare and a head held up high. At night I turn and I toss underneath these sheets til sunrise. I thought about getting up and going to you, but here you are living out of my spare bedroom. You were honest (you were bold). You were fragile (you were cold). Maybe now we both can smile a little wider while we hold the one we chose who chose us back at the moment of attack. The one we need who needs us back no matter what the aftermath. No matter what comes after that. Did you get your wings clipped? Did you keep your head held high?

Behind the Song:
“I reconnected with an old friend from high school. I can admit now that she was a big crush in my life since 8th grade when I saw her in a high school play with my older sister. Shortly after graduating she moved to Texas and got married. She contacted me out of nowhere late last year, she sounded troubled. She was coming to Chicago and wanted to get all of her old friends back together. It sounded great; I've missed them all so much over the years. I never got to the bottom of what was up, but we did hang out quite a bit and shared some great laughs. This song was for her. It was so strange to have her back in my house, living in our spare bedroom for a night. Such a friend, I wanted nothing more than to see her smiling. Months later, it came out that she was contemplating a divorce on her trip to Chicago, which she later went through with. Marriage is not an easy thing, and I can't explain what it is that makes one work and not the other. I know God is the glue in my marriage, I just don't know what we'd have without Him. This song just thanked Leslie for her contribution to my life, for coming back, for being real, for laughing with me again. It was such a full circle thing for me." - Daniel Castady (The Fold)
