In November 2012, I took advantage of a sale and picked up the Bond 50: The Complete 22 Film Collection Blu-Ray box set. With the release of Skyfall earlier that month, it was easy to have a bit of "Bond fever," and I was excited to make my way through the entire franchise. Up until that point, I'd only seen the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig Bond entries, so I was looking forward to seeing how the whole thing came together.
For 2025, Warner Bros. has released a 6-movie collection of James Bond movies, featuring Sean Connery in the role, in stunning 4K UHD. I hadn't seen any of these movies since I first picked up that 22-film box set almost thirteen years ago, so I was eager to see how they looked in 4K. I can say with certainty that they all look super impressive. They already looked good on Blu-Ray, but you can see even further enhancement with their 4K treatment. Connery's Bond has never looked this good.
When I first watched these movies, I found myself relatively underwhelmed with them. Yes, they have their moments, but Bond's swinging, women-using ways were pretty icky, and the action scenes weren't the best. Granted, fight scenes in movies seemed to still be coming into their own during this time in cinema history, so seeing Bond engage in some fisticuffs with S.P.E.C.T.R.E. baddies usually wasn't too impressive. But while the movies varied in overal quality, you can probably say the fight scenes improved with time. From the boring showdown with Dr. No in 1962 to the brutal elevator fight with an agent in 1971, there's definitely growth in that department.
I love the spy genre, and I feel like the Daniel Craig series of 007 movies had the best mix of action and spy elements. Connery was at his best when he was doing the spy thing, but as the movies got more outlandish in scope and scale, those moments seemed fewer and far in between. But in this set, I'd have to say my favorite entries were probably You Only Live Twice, Goldfinger, and From Russia with Love. The side characters added to the story, there were some memorable moments and villains, and usually the Bond girls were more than just eye candy (something that cannot be said for Connery's swan song, Diamonds are Forever).
So, if you love Sean Connery as James Bond, and you're into 4K UHD viewing, this set is a lovely upgrade for your collection. If you want my thoughts on each film, including a rundown of the kind of content you can expect for each one, please check out the individual review links above.
Side note - MPAA ratings were still pretty new at this time, so while these movies often get slapped with PG ratings, I'd say they're all more appropriately PG-13 in nature in actuality.
