NASHVILLE, Tenn. — When Lee Greenwood was on tour in the early 80s and penned the words “I’m proud to be an American,” he could not have imagined what a profound and lasting impact this line would have on an entire nation almost forty years later. Released in 1984, Lee Greenwood’s signature song “God Bless the USA” has now become America’s ‘second National Anthem’—it is instantly recognized and proudly sung from sea to shining sea.
Written to represent all that is good in America, “God Bless the USA” has had a strong and distinct history of appealing to “both sides of the aisle” despite the ever-changing, sometimes volatile political climate. Greenwood has personally been an honored guest to perform his signature song at special national events and ceremonies held through the term of every presidency—Republican and Democrat, from Ronald Reagan to the current Biden administration. Under the Bush administration, he was appointed and approved by the Senate as a Presidential Appointee to serve on the advisory committee of the National Endowment for the Arts. He continued that appointment under the Obama administration, Trump administration, and was recently replaced under the Biden administration.
Today, as America’s founding principles are scrutinized, along with our nation’s Judeo-Christian values, Greenwood remains steadfast in the belief that our Founding Fathers were correct when they established our new government, as George Washington famously said in 1790, “to be the last great experiment for promoting human happiness.” To reaffirm this belief, he partnered with Elite Source Pro to produce a special print edition “God Bless the USA” Bible, which includes the Founding documents of America (The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Pledge of Allegiance), along with the King James version of scripture. Greenwood also provided a handwritten copy of the chorus to “God Bless The USA” for inclusion in the special edition release.
“When I was presented with the idea of the “God Bless the USA” bible, I was immediately moved by the idea and the impact of the timing. In the midst of the uncertainty and turmoil of the past several years, a reminder of our Judeo-Christian values and who we are as Americans has never been more needed in our nation,” stated Greenwood. “I’m forever grateful for the inspiration I had to write ‘God Bless the USA’ and even more so for the continued impact it has had over the past four decades. I hope it can continue to bring renewed courage and inspiration to Americans everywhere for whatever challenges we face. Together, we’re strong!”
