NASHVILLE, TN (February 21, 2025) — Jordan Smith, the winner of Season 9 of “The Voice,” has now found his true voice. Smith’s new album, The People’s Hymnal, out now on Gaither Music Group, is the most personal and authentic artistic statement in Smith’s successful career.
“I made this record for myself, and you can hear the freedom and joy in it,” Smith said. “In the past, there were concerns about making things sound more pop or more radio friendly. This time, the only concern was, ‘How would Jordan Smith sing this song?’”
The People’s Hymnal is a dynamic collection of Gospel standards that reimagines beloved hymns with contemporary artistry, bridging the sacred and the soulful. Brimming with fresh arrangements and gorgeous gospel keys, the album hits that sweet spot between vintage gospel and classic pop.
The People’s Hymnal features soaring renditions of “Oh Happy Day” and “How Great Thou Art,” and an achingly beautiful version of "The Blood.” In addition, Smith turns in a striking vocal performance of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Performed in an intimate vocal and piano setting, the song showcases Smith’s octave-skipping vocal range and delicately wide vocal vibrato.
Co-produced by gospel and rock luminaries Tommy Sims (who co-wrote Eric Clapton’s GRAMMY-winning song, “Change the World,” and has worked with everyone from CeCe Winans to Bruce Springsteen) and Colin Linden (Lucinda Williams, the McCrary Sisters, also the primary music producer, songwriter and musician for ABC’s hit show “Nashville”), The People’s Hymnal vividly testifies to the magnificence of the music and its jubilant Christian message.
Smith was born and raised in Harlan, Kentucky where he grew up singing in his church choir. In 2015, he gained national recognition when he won Season 9 of “The Voice.” Smith then made history on Billboard’s Christian Charts by being the first artist to hold the top two positions concurrently. Smith’s first album debuted at No. 2 in sales in the iTunes Store, and he became the best-selling artist in “The Voice” history. In 2018, his song “Ashes” was recorded by his idol, Celine Dion, for the Deadpool 2 soundtrack. Recently, Smith earned third place in the prestigious American Song Contest. The People’s Hymnal is his fifth studio album, and sixth overall.
