With over 1.5 millions follows on Spotify and 20 albums and counting, no song made an impact quite like SHINE. Now, over three decades later, fans can finally experience the full analog production of this iconic song on vinyl for the very first time.
In 1994, Newsboys released Going Public, a bold, infectious, and faith-forward album that catapulted them from Christian rock favorites to household names in the CCM world.
Going Public won the Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year, solidifying its place in CCM history. The success of Shine and the album’s bold sound helped establish Newsboys as pioneers of contemporary Christian rock and pop — a status they’ve maintained through multiple decades and lineup changes.
Going Public was a game-changer. As the band's fifth studio album, it marked the emergence of the "classic" Newsboys lineup featuring Peter Furler, Jody Davis, Jeff Frankenstein, Duncan Phillips, and charismatic frontman John James. The sound was bolder, the production slicker, and the songwriting deeply resonant — merging catchy pop hooks with messages of bold faith.
The Hit Singles That Still Inspire
Several tracks from Going Public became instant hits — and remain fan favorites today:
“Shine” – Arguably the most iconic Newsboys track, Shine hit #1 on Christian radio and helped define '90s Christian pop culture. With its unforgettable lyrics ("Shine / Make 'em wonder what you've got..."), it also won the 1995 Dove Award for Rock Recorded Song of the Year.
“Spirit Thing” – A funky, groove-heavy celebration of the mysterious workings of the Holy Spirit, it showed off the band’s musical range and lyrical creativity.
“Truth and Consequences” and “Be Still” – Deep cuts that highlight the band’s talent for balancing introspective lyrics with anthemic energy.
