“Espionage” is Rusty Shipp’s unique underwater grunge sound on full throttle. This is quintessential Nautical Rock ’n’ Roll — an onslaught of sassy surf riffs and vocals drenched in fuzz and reverb — but with a spy twist (like something out of a James Bond movie). The single is released just weeks before the release of their upcoming concept album “Capsized Empire” (releasing June 27th).
Lyrically, the song uses imagery from past Rusty Shipp albums (as well as quotes from CS Lewis and Monty Python), and picks up where the story of the previous concept album, "Dark Side of the Ocean," ended. Now that the sea angels from the bottom of the ocean have risen to the surface, they venture to land to spy on mankind from beyond the shore -- to see what this legend of mankind is really like. On a deeper level, the lyrics explore themes of cancel culture and the challenge of walking the fine line of speaking truth and doing good in a divided world, poised and ready to demonize anyone with a different belief.
“Caught in the cross hairs between two cancel cultures
Riding under the radar, one wrong step you’re a goner
Like a double agent, I’m on a secret mission
Let ‘em in the kingdom early through a secret passage”
- Chorus of “Espionage”
The single precedes the release of their new album “Cosmic Innuendo, Vol. II: Capsized Empire” which will release publicly on streaming services on June 27th. It is the second volume in the band’s continuing “Cosmic Innuendo” concept album story that follows their previous album “Cosmic Innuendo, Vol. 1: Dark Side of the Ocean.”
New Album “Capsized Empire”: releases worldwide on June 27, 2025
