NASHVILLE, TN (February 17, 2026) - Legendary Christian rock pioneers Petra have released their new single “Filthy Lucre” to Christian radio, continuing the momentum of their landmark return with the album Hope. Written by founding member Bob Hartman and produced by Petra, the song delivers a hard-hitting lyrical and musical statement that confronts the false promises of wealth and power while pointing unmistakably to Christ as the only true source of redemption.
“Filthy Lucre” stands firmly in Petra’s long-established tradition of Scripture-driven rock, tackling timeless spiritual issues with clarity and conviction. Set against driving guitars and muscular rhythms, the song paints a vivid picture of a world chasing gold and fleeting treasures, only to be left empty and bound by what it cannot satisfy. The lyrics expose the seductive lies of greed, describing wealth as chains of gold that bind the senses, wound the conscience, and stain the soul, while reminding listeners that the riches of this world cannot save a dying soul. The message resolves not in despair, but in hope, declaring that only Christ can bring redemption, make us whole, and free hearts hardened by darkness.
That uncompromising clarity has defined Petra from the beginning. Formed in a Bible school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the band built its identity on delivering biblical truth through unapologetic rock music. Early performances in parks, prisons, and coffeehouses laid the groundwork for a ministry that would eventually challenge both the Christian music industry and the church itself. Petra faced criticism, resistance, and even protest, yet their audience continued to grow, drawn by lyrics that refused to dilute Scripture and music that matched the intensity of the message.
Across more than five decades, Petra released 20 studio albums, two Spanish-language albums, and two live projects, selling nearly 10 million records worldwide. Their impact is marked by 13 Grammy nominations with four wins, 10 Dove Awards, and numerous historic milestones, including being the first Christian rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the first Christian band to perform at Farm Aid. Artists across generations have consistently pointed to Petra as a foundational influence that combined theological depth, musical excellence, and fearless faith.
Although the band officially retired in 2005, Petra reunited in 2024 for a 50 Year Petra Reunion and 50th Anniversary World Tour, featuring Bob Hartman, John Schlitt, John Lawry, Greg Bailey, and Cristian Borneo. The tour drew multigenerational crowds, underscoring how deeply their music continues to resonate with longtime fans and new listeners alike.
The album Hope has already demonstrated strong resonance at radio. The project’s first radio single debuted at number one on the Christian Radio Chart Weekly and also reached number one on the Christian Radio Chart Monthly, affirming Petra’s continued relevance and enduring connection with audiences. With the release of “Filthy Lucre” to Christian radio, the band once again challenges listeners to examine where they place their trust, urging hearts to loosen the grip of worldly gain and rediscover the freedom found in Christ alone.
In a culture still building towers on unstable ground, Petra’s voice remains steady and unflinching. “Filthy Lucre” is not merely a song, but a call to discernment, repentance, and renewed focus on eternal truth, reminding the church that while gold may glitter, only Christ can truly save.
