The Sagehens are Josh Ottum, Frank Lenz, and an assorted cast of highly qualified characters. They hail from the entrhalling landscapes of Southern California. Most of their work centers on themes of deep emotionality, highly technical musical transitions, and an almost lifesaving sense of lyrical depth. This may sound ridiculous...and it is.
Ottum and Lenz set out to sail the ship of destiny toward the oil platforms of Huntington Beach. Each week for a full summer, Ottum took the bus from Seal Beach to Huntington Beach to Lenz' studio just blocks from the ocean. They'd write and record the basics for each song in a day, then Ottum would bus or bike back home in the dark. Their mission, which they chose to accept, was to simply change the face of humanity for all eternity.
And so the name dropping will begin:
Frank Lenz has played music with Richard Swift, David Bazan, Damien Jurado, Starflyer 59 and The Weepies. He has also played on thousands of recordings you've heard while shopping at Urban Outfitters. Ottum has also played with Richard Swift and David Bazan as well as Rosie Thomas and Alexi Murdoch. The cast of characters joining the Sagehens includes Tess Shapiro (Tess and Dave, Father John Misty) Ryan Richter (Dijon, Lizzy MacAlpine), Casey Foubert (Sufjan Stevens, The Shins), David Vandervelde (Jay Bennett, FJM), and Elijah Thomson (Father John Misty, Richard Swift). It's also worth noting : the record was mixed by Elijah at Elliott Smith's New Monkey Studios.
The Pacific Ocean is in flux as the waters warm and plastic is quickly becoming the new kelp. As nature goes, we can assuredly say that human activity is testing the resiliency of non-human beings. The stomachs of fish fill up with carbon-based products and spin classes fill up in Orange County with equal measure. Kale smoothies and botox are at an all-time high, and traffic on the 405 flows like a vein recently injected with high-octane Monster drink. The Sagehens have captured all of the above in their debut release VALLEY GO HOME.
So, long live rock and roll, easy listening, and prog rock based on yacht rock pumped out in the 70s and 80s by the likes of Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, and ELP.
We hope you will enjoy the debut that was a pure joy to create. The first single 'Dumb & Drummer' will arrive on 3/27 followed by the full length 'Valley Go Home' on 5/01 via Velvet Blue Music."
