FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Punk rock songstress Grace Graber has released the latest in her viral PUNK X PRAISE series with “Oceans,” streaming everywhere now at https://slinky.to/OCEANS.
Grace Graber’s release of this worship staple comes as “Gratitude,” her take on a Brandon Lake song, sits on CMW’s CHR chart as a Hit On the Verge as it has entered the top 40 after just a few weeks. “Oceans,” which was produced by Disciple’s Josiah Prince, represents a different layer of what Grace is accomplishing with her punk renditions of worship songs as she tackles one of the best-known — and most polarizing — worship songs of the past few decades.
“I can't tell you how many times I've heard fellow artists say that Christian music really changed when ‘Oceans’ came out,” Grace reflects. “One of the reasons why I wanted to do ‘Oceans’ is that many of these people that I talk to who bring up ‘Oceans,’ they’re ones that used to be a part of the music scene when Christian rock was really on fire. When touring was a lot easier than it is now. And most of them were impacted by the change away from rock in a huge way. They were so impacted that it felt like they couldn't just be a Christian rock band anymore.”
But with her take on “Oceans,” Grace is changing that narrative by proving that maybe it shouldn’t be one or the other.
With her typical redemptive fire, the singer says, “If ‘Oceans’ changed the course of history, let's reclaim it. The whole point of PUNK X PRAISE is to get people to reconsider a genre that has been on the back burner. They already love the songs. These people loved ‘Oceans’ growing up, and now it's a little more rock 'n' roll.”
That’s the exact kind of approach that has already had more than a million people on social media stream clips of her take on Brandon Lake’s “Gratitude,” plus hundreds of thousands more watch “That’s Who I Praise” and Forrest Frank’s “Lemonade.” “Gratitude” also went for adds at CHR radio in March, where it is currently rising through the top 40 on CMW’s chart.
The clip of “Oceans” that Grace teased on Instagram has already amassed close to 50k views, with listeners commenting things like “The world needs more classic Christian punk versions” and “Fantastic!!! Can’t wait for the whole album.”
That full album is out April 10, and can be presaved now at https://slinky.to/PUNKXPRAISEvol1. The album will contain more punk spins on well-loved worshipful moments, as well as an original.
“One of my mentors is very passionate about doing music in the 444 frequency, which is like the frequency of heaven,” Grace says, diving deeper into the song’s musical weight. “One of the things that I did to reclaim this song was that there's a version of it in 444. I thought it sounded rough, but I did it. I just want to do a version in 444 to beat whatever stronghold might be attached to this song spiritually. Maybe I'll release it one day.”
She candidly concludes, “For me personally, doing this cover was a way to go, ‘No we're not gonna have the narrative around “Oceans” be Christian music changed in a way that only sucked for Christian rock bands. What if it could actually mean something good for Christian rock bands?’ I’m ready to represent the misfits.”
