PERRY LAHAIE REVISITS THE SPIRITUAL AWAKENING STILL SHAPING HIS LIFE ON NEW SINGLE "WELL DONE"

A farmer working after dark becomes the enduring image behind a song about grace, faithfulness and mission

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Long before "Well Done" became a song, Perry LaHaie carried an image he could not shake: a farmer still working his field after dark, tractor lights cutting through the dusk. He saw the scene during his sophomore year at Olivet University. Weeks later, after returning home to northern Michigan after the unexpected end of a relationship, the image came back with uncomfortable clarity. The farmer was steady, patient and faithful. LaHaie felt like the opposite.

Looking back on that season, LaHaie has described himself as being "asleep at the wheel of the tractor" rather than faithfully working the fields of the kingdom. "I realized in that moment that if Jesus were to return, I wasn't ready. I was cut to the heart and realized I need to turn 180 from the glaring compromises in my life and follow Jesus with my whole heart," LaHaie reflects. The contrast between the faithful farmer and being "asleep at the wheel" became part of a spiritual awakening that is still reverberating in his heart today - and eventually gave "Well Done" its central image.

Decades later, "Well Done" returns to the same question from a different vantage point: What does faithfulness without compromise look like when a person is no longer trying to build an identity on achievement or approval?

"I'm an achiever. I love to hear, 'Great job, you're awesome!' Sometimes I look for my ultimate identity in that," LaHaie says. "But I realize I won't find my ultimate identity in that; it will always disappoint. What does fulfill me now is hearing the Lord say, 'You are my precious son.' And then what my heart really longs to hear one day is, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'"

For LaHaie, that longing is not about earning God's approval. It begins with grace. "What I've learned is that we never move on from the gospel," he says. "Unearnable grace is what gets us in the family. Unearnable grace keeps us in the family." From that place of belonging, the song turns toward the question of how a life already loved by God is then poured out for Him. "Grace compels me to pour out my life especially for people groups that still don't have the gospel."

"Through 'Well Done' I hear Jesus asking me: 'Do you know who you are? Do you know why you're here?' And then I remember who I am: 'Beloved,' and why I'm here: To partner with Jesus in his mission to heal the world," LaHaie says.

That question also reaches beyond LaHaie's own story. The field imagery intersects naturally with his work through FrontiersUSA and the Great Commission, where he has spent years sharing stories of what God is doing among Muslims and inviting believers to consider their own part in engaging the Muslim world with the gospel. For LaHaie, success is increasingly measured less by visibility and more by faithfulness. As he puts it, "Being faithful with my tiny part in the great story of redemption is success."

Musically, "Well Done" carries that reflective message through warm American roots-rock, Americana and country-adjacent textures. The track was produced by Stephen Leiweke, mixed by Chad Howat and mastered by Sam Moses, with electric guitars by Nathan Duggar, drums by Jacob Schrodt, bass by James Gregory, keys by Eric Barfield, background vocals by Justine Blanchet and LaHaie, and additional guitars by Leiweke. It was recorded at Yackland in East Nashville.

Released online Sept. 4, "Well Done" is available now on digital platforms and is part of a continuing string of singles LaHaie hopes will ultimately become his next record. The song stands as both a reflection on the awakening that shaped him and an invitation to listeners to live loved, live faithfully, longing to hear Jesus say, "Well done."
