Grits
Grammatical Revolution

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 18 tracks
Street Date: May 16, 1999

Grits is a very well known duo in the Christian rap industry and have been around longer than probably most know. This album from their earlier years, Grammatical Revolution, came out back in '99 and after just one listen you can tell that Coffee and Bonafide were on their way to being big in the rap game.

The first thing that I'll point out is that the spiritual aspect and the very Christ-centered lyrics are hard to miss. Grammatical Revolution definitely surpasses the other more recent Grits albums in that category. Spiritual highlights come from tracks like "Strugglin" and "Supreme Being;" songs dealing with fighting principalities, relying on God always, and knowing that He is in control of everything. However, when it comes to the music, you will definitely be getting more head bobbing done when you listen to the newer stuff. That being said, tracks like "I'ma Showem," "Stop Bitin," and "Supreme Being" definitely display some great production, good lyrics, and the ability to be played in any club. "C2K" brings those tight lyrics better than any other on the rest of the album, such as "Everyone's invited to the circle, come on in and do bring a friend 'cuz when the kids on a natural high, we boogie 'til we die, erupting the spot like the 4th of July."

The group does slow it down a bit on a few tracks. "It Takes Love" and "Time is Passing" both feature the vocal talents of Out of Eden which make for a nice break to speak on some serious matters. You may also notice Verbs (known as Knowdaverbs then) helping Grits out. Verbs adds nicely on a couple of tracks and you can tell that it wasn't the first time that they have combined their talents together.

All in all, I love some dirty south rap (you'll catch some acoustic guitar in here) that brings on some thought as well as serving as a good listen. For it being closer to the beginning of their career, Grits put out a very solid album. If you're a Grits fan, this will add nicely to your collection.
